This is for the first time when the researchers have used human embryonic stem cells to formulate artificial sperm as well as egg. Earlier, the scientists had created sperm in addition to egg using rodent stem cells but it is on the first occasion when the scientists have utilised human stem cells for that experiment.
The study was conducted through the researchers at Weizmann Institute in Israel and University of Cambridge inside UK.
Dr Naoko Irie, research author from the Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute at Cambridge, mentioned, “The creation of primordial germ cells is probably the earliest events during early mammalian progress. This is a stage which we have managed to recreate with the help of stem cells via rats or mice, but until right now few scientists have done this systematically utilizing human stem cells. ”
Lead research author Professor Azim Surani, from the Gurdon Institute, and his colleagues found that a gene called SOX17 is vital for directing this human stem cells for becoming primitive germ cells (PGCs).
Based on the researchers, PGCs is also developed from this reprogrammed adult cells like skin cells. This will make it possible for proper investigations upon patient-specific cells to advance the data of infertility, human being germline and also germ cell tumours.
The researchers say the research also holds the potential to raised understand the ‘epigenetic’ inheritance process.
