Type 1 Diabetes More Dangerous For Women Than Men, New Study Finds

Type 1 diabetes is actually more dangerous for women than men, new research recommends.

In a study published within the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, researchers found which female patients have a 40 per cent enhanced risk of death from any cause and are twice as more likely to die from heart disease than men with exactly the same condition.

Scientists at the University of Queensland inside Australia analysed data from 26 studies involving in excess of 200,000 males and females with type 1 diabetes.

The study additionally found that women with the condition were at higher risk of strokes and were 44 per cent more prone to die from kidney disease.

Lead researcher professor Rachel Huxley stated, “We already knew that people who have type 1 diabetes have shorter life expectancies compared to the general population, but this study was able to determine for the 1st time that the risk of mortality is actually greater in women than men with this disease.

“It's speculated which women with type 1 diabetes generally have greater difficulties with insulin management and also glycaemic control than men, factors which could contribute to their increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Prof Huxley said that more study was needed to determine the exact cause from the difference between the sexes.

Type 1 diabetes wasn't linked to an increased risk of death from cancers within either gender, she said.
